All animals should be fasted prior to surgery. We recommend no food after midnight the night before surgery, water is ok until arriving at the clinic. If your pet has any individual health concerns, please reach out for possible alternative recommendations
If your pet receives regular grooming, keep in mind they will not be able to be bathed for 2 weeks after surgery. You may want to consider bathing them prior to surgery. Having your pet clean, sets them up for optimal healing.
If your pet routinely takes anti-anxiety for veterinary visits, please give them as prescribed. Be sure to inform our staff that your pet is
pre-medicated at check in.
After check in, our doors will be locked to allow us to focus on the pets in our care. Physical exams are performed to ensure all animals are healthy enough to undergo surgery.
Your pet will then receive a premedication. This will include pain medication and a sedative. These medications help the animals transition to general anesthesia and help us to reduce the amount of anesthesia required to perform surgery.
All pets (with the exception of male cats) will have an IV catheter placed. This allows us to administer medications and fluids during surgery.
An endotracheal tube is placed to secure the airway and allow us to provide oxygen and respiratory support in the event of an emergency.
During the procedure, your pet's vital signs are closely monitored and anesthesia is adjusted accordingly. Close monitoring is continued through recovery with reversal agents administered as needed.
Your pet will be directly supervised during their entire stay.
You will receive a text message once your pet’s procedure is complete and is in recovery.
At discharge your pet may still be a bit groggy, all animals will be up and walking before going home. It can take up to 24 hours for the full affects of anesthesia to wear off.
It is common for pets to feel a bit nauseous after surgery. You pet may not feel like eating or drinking or may vomit the evening after surgery. This is often not concerning, however if it persists more than 24 hours your pet needs to be examined.
The first 10-14 days post-surgery are critical to insure proper healing. You pet needs to be kept calm and quiet during this recovery period. This means no running, jumping, swimming or baths during this time. Dogs should be leash walked and cats kept inside. Excess activity increases the risk for hemorrhage, dehiscence, and incisional irritation/infection.
Your pet will be discharged with pain medication and an e-collar to prevent licking or irritating the incision. It is very important that your pet wears the cone for the first 10-14 days after surgery.
If your pet would benefit from post op anti-anxiety medications, or mild sedatives please don’t hesitate to let us know.
